## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

1985 ROGINSON R-22 HELICOPTER WAS DEMONSTRATING A 180 DEGREE ROTATION WHEN IT EXPERIENCED LOW RPM AND LANDED HARD FROM 50 FEET AGL. (-23)AT TIME AND PLACE OF OCCURRENCE, INSTRUCTOR PILOT (HUGH PAUL COVOPOULO) WAS DEMONSTRATING A 180 DEGREE AUTOROTATION MANEUVER TO HIS STUDENT (GUY RAOUL ROSENSCHEIN). DURING FINAL APPROACH SEGMENT OF THE MANEUVER, THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT DEMONSTRATED AN EXTENDED GLIDE. DURING THE EXTENDED GLIDE PROCEDURE, THE AIRCRAFT LOST ROTOR RPM AT APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET AGL AND SUBSEQUENTLY IMAPCTED THE GROUND AREA APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET SUTH OF THE APPROACH END OF RUNWAY 6 (HWV). THE ARICRAFT CAME TO REST ON ITS LEFT SIDE 20 FEET SOUTH OF THE INITIAL AREA, RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND CAUSING AN INJURY TO THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC99LA190](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC99LA190), Aug 5, 1999: Robinson R-22A (N8561K), Shirley, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain rotor RPM, which resulted in a hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
