## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AFTER TAKE OFF, MR. STRUCK TRIED TO RAISE THE LANDING GEAR. DURING THIS PROCESS, BOTH PILOTS HEARD A NOISE, THAT ONE CALLED A LOUD POP. THE INSTRUCTOR, MR. KEELEY PARIS SAID HE COULD SEE A PROBLEM WITH THE NOSE GEAR BY LOOKING IN THE MIRROR LOCATED ON THE LEFT WING. AFTER A FLY BY, PERSONNEL FROM OTTUMWA FLYING SERVICE CONFIRMED THE NOSE GEAR WAS NOT LOCKED IN THE UP OR DOWN POSITION. MR. KEELEY TRIED THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE, USING THE HAND CRANK; HE ALSO TRIED A DIVE PULL OUT, BUT NEITHER WAS SUCCESSFUL. MR. KEELEY THEN LANDED NEXT TO RUNWAY 13 ON THE GRASS ON THE MAIN LANDING GEAR AND AS THE AIR SPEED DISSIPATED, ALLOWED THE NOSE TO SETTLE ON THE GROUND, CAUSING MINIMAL DAMAGE. MR. MIKE JOHNSON, AN AIRCRAFT MECHANIC AT OTTUMWA FLYING SERVICE HAS DETERMINED THE NOSE GEAR RETRACT ROD WAS BROKE; THAT IS THE PART THAT MOVES THE NOSE GEAR UP OR DOWN. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED WITH THIS REPORT. INCIDENT #ICE0119990043
