## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACFT LOST POWER ON TAKE-OFF AND STRUCK A RISE IN THE TERRAIN, OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES ARE UNKNOWN. (-23)THE PRIVATE RANCH STRIP DOES NOT HAVE A WIND SOCK. THE OPERATOR HAS A PENNANT ATTACHED TO THE ANTENNA OF A SERVICE VEHICLE WHICH WAS AT THE NORTH END OF THE GRASS STRIP. THE PILOT STARTED A TAKEOFF TO THE SOUTH IN CALM CONDITIONS JUST AS A COLD FRONT MOVED OVER THE FIELD FROM THE NORTHEAST. THE PILOT DUMPED HIS 400 GALLON LOAD OF HERBICIDES TWO THIRDS OF THE WAY DOWN THE 260 FOOT GRASS STRIP AND ABORTED THE TAKEOFF. A QUARTERING LEFT TAILWIND WAS BLOWING, AND THE AIRPLANE OVERRAN THE SOUTH END OF THE STRIP, CARTWHEELING INTO A MEADOW 20 FEET BELOW, AND 156 PACES BEYOND THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW99LA221](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW99LA221), Aug 13, 1999: Air Tractor 502B (N6042K), Guthrie, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate weather evaluation prior to takeoff. Factors associated with the accident were an inadequate wind direction indicator, a sudden windshift, and a tailwind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
