## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHING DOWN WHEN PASSENGER IN FRONT SEAT ACTIVATED THE SPOILERS. THIS REDUCED THE LIFT, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND HARD. AT THIS POINT, THE PASSENGER RELEASED THE SPOILER CONTROL, ALLOWING THEM TO RETRACT. THE AIRCRAFT ROSE TO AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET, AT WHICH TIME THE PASSENGER AGAIN ACTIVATED THE SPOILERS, REDUCING THE LIFT AND CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND HARD ENOUGH TO COLLAPSE THE LEFT MAIN GEAR. THE AIRPLANE THEN VEERED OFF TOWARDS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, STRIKING A TREE WIHT THE LEFT WING. THE LEFT WING FUEL CELL WAS RUPTURED AND THE IARCRAFT CAME TO REST ON A DITCH IN A NOSE-DOWN ATTITUDE. ALL THREE OCCUPANTS EXITED THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA99LA236](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA99LA236), Aug 22, 1999: Michael L. Luckey Sportsman 2 + 2 (N116ML), Grand Junction, TN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The improper spoiler extension by the passenger following the bounced landing, which resulted in the hard landing and collapse of the left main landing gear.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
