## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4) AFTER HAVING FLOWN ABOUT 4 HOURS, THE AIRPLANE WAS OBSERVED BY TWO EYEWITNESSES AT ABOUT 100 FEET AGL, WITH NO DISCERNIBLE ENGINE SOUND, ABOUT 2 TO 3 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. THE PILOT TRANSMITTED 'MAYDAY' THREE TIMES AND SAID THAT HE HAD RUN OUT OF GAS. THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH 75 TO 80 FOOT TREES ABOUT 2 MILES SHORT OF THE AIRPORT. ALL ENGINE AND AIRFRAME COMPONENTS REVEALED NO MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS, POST CRASH. NO USEABLE FUEL WAS FOUND ON THE AIRPLANE. WITH THE POST CRASH ADDITION OF FUEL, THE ENGINE AND FUEL SOURCE SELECTOR SYSTEM OPERATED SATISFACTORILY. AT APPROXIMATELY 1656 HOURS LOCAL TIME THE PILOT REPORTED TO PICKENS COUNTY UNICOM THAT HE HAD RUN OUT OF FUEL AND WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE THE AIRPORT. AT APPROXIMATELY 1658 HOURS N67198 CRASHED IN A GROVE OF HARDWOOD TREES APPROXIMATELY 2.5 MILES FROM THE END OF PICKENS COUNTY RUNWAY 23. THE PILOT, ^PRIVACY D^ AND HIS PASSENGER WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED AND TRANSPORTED TO GREENVILLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. AT APPROXIMATELY 1830 HOURS, ^PRIVACY DATA ^ DIED FROM COMPLICATIONS RESULTING FROM THE INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN THE CRASH.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA99FA232](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA99FA232), Aug 22, 1999: Beech C24R (N67198), Pickens, SC, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to properly preflight plan and prepare for the flight's fuel consumption resulting in engine loss of power due to fuel exhaustion and the subsequent inflight collision with trees.
