## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4) THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD DEPARTED WITH THE FUEL SELECTED ON THE LEFT TANK. WHILE MANEUVERING OVER SOME CLEAR-CUT TIMBER, AT AN ALTITUDE OF ABOUT 300 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT. THE PILOT REALIZED THAT HE HAD EXHAUSTED THE FUEL IN THE LEFT TANK AND ATTEMPTED TO SWITCH TO THE RIGHT TANK, WHICH HAD ABOUT 12 GALLONS OF FUEL REMAINING. THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND, AND A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE TO A DIRT ROAD. (-23) N2584P WAS FORCED TO LAND DUE TO A LOSS OF POWER FROM THE ENGINE. THE TANK SUPPLYING FUEL TO ENGINE HAD RUN OUT OF FUEL, ALTHOUGH ANOTHER TANK HAD FUEL. THE PILOT FAILED TO SWITCH OVER TO THAT TANK WITH FUEL BEFORE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. N2584P IS EQUIPPED WITH FLOATS. EMERGENCY LANDING ATTEMPTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC99LA218](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC99LA218), Sep 2, 1999: Piper PA-18-150 (N2584P), Greenville, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot in command's inattentive management of the fuel supply.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
