## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1999, AT 1810 LOCAL TIME, ACA FLIGHT 7329 FROM ROC TO IAD ABORTED TAKEOFF DUE TO THE LEFT HAND ENGINE MAKING TWO LOUD BANGS AND CREATING A STRONG VIBRATION. THE CREW NOTED LOW TORQUE ON THE LEFT HAND ENGINE AND THE ENGINE APPEARED TO BE WINDMILLING. THE LEFT HAND ENGINE RPM INCREASED AND THE CREW HEARD ONE MORE LOUD BANG WITH SMOKE COMING OUT THE TOP OF THE COWLING. THE CREW SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND FIRED BOTH BOTH BOTTLES. THE PASSENGERS WERE DEPLANED AT TAXIWAY "D". ARFF RESPONDED AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS TOWED TO THE RAMP WITHOUT INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF FIRE. PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE ENGINE SUFFERED AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE GEARBOX. THE LEFT HAND ENGINE WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED. FIRE BOTTLES AND SQUIBS WERE REPLACED. THE OPERATIONAL CHECK WAS OK. THE AIRCRAFT WAS APPROVED FOR RETURN TO SERVICE. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
