## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT APPROX. 1410 LOCAL CST, N2301C, A ROBINSON R-22 HELICOPTER CRASHED WHILE PRACTICING SIMULATED ENGINE OUT PROCEDURES TO A TOUCH DOWN. THE A/C DEPARTED THE RUNWAY ENVIRONMENT AND ASCENDED TO AN ALTITUDE OF APPROX. 500 FEET AGL. UPON REACHING THAT ALTITUDE AND IN CRUISE FLIGHTM THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR RETARDED THE THROTTLE, SIMULATING A ENGINE FAILURE. THE STUDENT PILOT REDUCED THE COLLECTIVE AND ENTERED A AUTOROTAION. TO MAINTAIN THE ROTOR IN THE REQUIRED PARAMETERS, THE STUDENT PILOT INCREASED THE COLLECTIVE. THE ROTOR DECAYED TO THE POINT WHERE THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR JOINED THE STUDENT PILOT ON THE CONTROLS, LOWERING THE COLLECTIVE TO THE FULL DOWN POSITION TO REGAIN THE ROTOR RPM. THE COLLECTIVE DECREASE FAILED TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED EFFECT. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ATTEMPTED TO INCREASE THE THROTTLE TO THE FULL OPEN POSITION. THE ENGINE FAILED TO RESPOND TO THE INCREASE SUFFICIENTLY TO INCREASE ROTOR RPM. THE A/C IMPACTED THE EARTH IN A LEVEL, STRAIGHT DIRECTION, DESTROYING THE AIRCRAFT. THE FLIGHT CONDITION WAS VFR. THE WIND CONDITION WAS AT OR NEAR ZERO.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW00LA014](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW00LA014), Oct 21, 1999: Robinson R22 Beta (N2301C), Jonesboro, AR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's delay in taking remedial action to recover from a low rotor rpm situation. A factor was the student's failure to maintain adequate rotor rpm.

## Other reports on N2301C (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19920602018039A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920602018039A), Jun 2, 1992: Robsin R22BETA (N2301C), Las Vegas, NV, Substantial damage. Wind shift on departing helipad. Lost rotor RPM clearing trees as descent started due lost lift. Hard impact.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
