## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23)THE PILOT WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND AT AN UNFAMILIAR AIRPORT. THE MORGAN ASOS WAS CONTINUALLY REPORTING WINDS AT 10 KNOTS WITH GUSTS TO 15 KNOTS AT 300 DEGREES TO 320 DEGREES. OUT OF THE TWO RUNWAYS THAT WERE AVAILABLE, RUNWAY 21 AND RUNWAY 3, THE PILOT WANTED RUNWAY 21 BECAUSE HE BELIEVED THE WINDS WOULD FAVOR RUNWAY 21 OVER RUNWAY 3. THE PILOT BELIEVED HE WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 21 WHEN IN FACT HE LANDED ON RUNWAY 3. THE PILOT APPLIED 30 DEGREES OF FLAPS ON DOWNWIND AND FLEW FINAL AND ROUNDED OUT FOR A 3 POINT LANDING. THE STALL WARNING HORN SOUNDED JUST AS THE WHEELS TOUCHED DOWN. THE PLANE STARTED DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT EDGE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT APPLIED MORE RIGHT RUDDER TO STRAIGHTEN THE PLANE BUT IT HAD NO EFFECT. THE NOSE CAME LEFT AND THE PILOT APPLIED POWER AND THE PLANE STRAIGHTENED BRIEFLY. THE PILOT APPLIED FULL POWER TO GO AROUND. HE LOST CONTROL, THE LEFT WING STRUCK THE GROUND TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY, THE PLANE WENT UP ON ITS NOSE, SLID AND CAME TO REST ON ITS BACK. A SMALL FIRE STARTED WITHIN THE ENGINE AFTER THE CRASH.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL00LA001](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL00LA001), Oct 22, 1999: Cessna 305C (N3255H), Morganton, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for a tailwind which resulted in the loss of control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
