## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON NOV. 5, 1999, AT APPROXIMATELY 1745 CST, A WACO, N698N, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHEN IT IMPACTED TREES DURING THE FINAL APPROACH TO THE PROMISE LAND AIRPARK AIRPORT, A PRIVATE GRASS STRIP, LOCATED NEAR MIDWAY, ARKANSAS. THE AIRPLANE WAS REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY THE PILOT. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. VMC CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE PERSONAL FLIGHT AND A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED. THE LOCAL SIGHT-SEEING-FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM PROMISE LAND AIRPORT ABOUT 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO ACCIDENT. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE HAD MANEUVERED THE AIRPLANE ONTO THE FINAL APPROACH LEG FOR RUNWAY 33. THE PILOT REALIZED THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS LOW, AND HE "ADVANCED THE THROTTLE AND PITCHED NOSE UP." HE STATED THAT "THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH POWER TO CLIMB, AND THE AIRPLANE STALLED." THE AIRPLANE CONTACTED A TREE WITH IT'S LEFT WING AND CAME TO REST UPRIGHT IN A WOODED AREA, 1/4 MILE FROM APPROACH END OF THE RUNWAY. ON NOV. 8, 1999, AN FAA INSPECTOR EXAMINED THE AIRPLANE AT THE SITE AND DETERMINED THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. INSPECTOR CURT WEEDMAN REPORTED THE FRONT WING SPARS FOR THE UPPER AND LOWER LEFT WINGS WERE STRUCTURALLY DAMAGED. THE LEFT ELEV ATOR WAS BENT, THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR ASSEMBLY SEPARATED FROM THE AIRFRAME, AND THE ENGINE SEPARATED FROM THE AIRFRAME.
