## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ^PRIVACY DA^ WAS THE PIC OF N7317A, A CESSNA 210 N, THAT DEPARTED PDK 1143 LOCAL ON 11/07/99 ON A VFR FLIGHT. FOUR MINUTES AFTER DEPARTURE N7317A INFORMED THE PDK ATC THAT HE WAS REQUESTING A RETURN TO THE AIRPORT BECAUSE OF A LANDING GEAR PROBLEM AND SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. N7317A WAS CLEARED TO ENTER A RIGHT DOWNWIND FOR RUNWAY 02R. AFTER SOME CONVERSATION WITH THE CONTROLLER RUNWAY 20L WAS OFFERED TO N7317A AS IT WAS THE CLOSEST RUNWAY TO THE AIRCRAFT. ^PRIVACY DA^ STATED THAT HE HAD RUNWAY 20L IN SIGHT BUT FOR UNKNOWN REASONS N7317A PROCEEDED SOUTH PAST RUNWAY 20L UNTIL IT WAS IN POSITION TO ENTER A RIGHT BASE LEG TO LAND ON RUNWAY 02R. THE CONTROLLER AND ^PRIVACY DA^ DISCUSSED WHETHER THE LANDING GEAR WAS DOWN AND ^PRIVACY DA^ STATED HIS INTENTION TO FLY DOWN THE RUNWAY AND HAVE THE TOWER VISUALLY CHECK THE POSITION OF THE GEAR. ^PRIVACY DA^ ALSO STATED THAT HE STILL HAD SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT AND THE COCKPIT WINDOW WAS OPEN. THE CONTROLLER INFORMED N7317A THAT FROM A DISTANCE THE GEAR LOOKED DOWN. ^PRIVACY DA^ SAID THAT IT FELT LIKE THE GEAR WAS STILL UP. N7317A WAS CLEARED TO LAND ON 02R AND TURNED FINAL. AS N7317A CROSSED THE END OF THE RUNWAY FOR LANDING, THE CONTROLLER STATED THAT THE GEAR DID NOT APPEAR TO BE DOWN AND DIRECTED N7317A TO GO AROUND. N7317A INITIATED A GO AROUND AND BEGAN A RIGHT CLIMBING TURN WHICH PUT IT IN POSITION TO LAND ON RUNWAY 27. ON FINAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 27 ATC INFORMED N7317A THAT THERE WERE VEHICLES ON RUNWAY 27 AND ASKED IF HE COULD GO AROUND. ^PRIVACY DA^ BEGAN A GO AROUND WITH DENSE SMOKE OBSERVED IN THE COCKPIT BY PILOTS WITHIN 100 FEET OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT FLEW DOWN RUNWAY 27 AND BEGAN A LOW ALTITUDE LEFT TURN. N7317A IMPACTED THE GROUND BETWEEN RUNWAY 2R AND 2L ON A 085 DEGREE HEADING. THE ACCIDENT WAS FATAL AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED BY IMPACT AND THE ENSUING FIRE DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
