## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1999 AT 0105 LOCAL, A CASTLE AVIATION PIPER AEROSTAR, N8047J, LANDED ON RUNWAY SEVEN AT ROC AFTER REPORTING A GEAR PROBLEM. WHILE TAXIING TO THE RAMP, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. THE DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE REPORTED TO THE SCENE TO REMOVE THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE RUNWAY. AFTER INSPECTING THE AIRCRAFT, THE DOM FOUND THAT A BOLT THAT SECURES THE NOSE STEERING ACTUATOR TO THE STRUT HAD SHEARED. THIS WOULD CAUSE AN EXCESSIVE NOSE WHEEL SHIMMY, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE STEERING ACTUATOR ALSO ACTS AS A SHIMMY DAMPER. THE EXCESSIVE SHIMMY CAUSED THE OVER CENTER LOCK TO COME FREE AFTER ADDITIONAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE HAD OCCURRED IN THE NOSE GEAR BAY. THE DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE PERFORMED INTERIM REPAIRS TO THE NOSE GEAR SUPPORT STRUCTURE AND FERRIED THE AIRCRAFT, GEAR DOWN, BACK TO HIS MAINTENANCE BASE. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
