## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DECEMBER 17, 1999 WHILE CRUISING AT 2500 FEET FROM OWB TO 29C AIRCRAFT N5BB ENGINE SPUTTERED AND FUEL FLOW FLUNCTUATED. THE ENGINE QUIT AND COULD NOT RESTART USING THE OTHER FUEL TANKS AND WOBBLE PUMP. UPON LANDING IN THE FIELD THE NOSE GEAR DUG IN AND THE A/C FLIPPED ON ITS BACK. ON DECEMBER 19 1999, GL23 INSPECTORS FOUND FUEL IN THE RIGHT HAND TANK BUT NOT THE LEFT TANK. THE TANK SELECTOR WAS EXTENDED IN THE WOBBLE POSITION TOWARDS THE RIGHT HAND POSITION. THE PILOT PROVIDED A FUEL RECEIPT FROM OWB FOR 43.3 GALLONS OF FUEL, TOPPING OFF ALL THE TANKS. HE STATED THAT HE HAD FLOWN ABOUT 1 HOUR ON THE LEFT TANK AND ABOUT 1/2 HOUR EACH ON THE RIGHT AND AUX TANKS, PLUS A TAKEOFF AND 1/2 HOUR ADDITIONAL FLIGHT ON THE RIGHT TANK OUT OF HUNTINGTON, IN., BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. ON DECEMBER 27, 1999 GL23 INSPECTORS WERE ABLE TO CONFIRM AN UNSPECIFIED AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE AUX TANK.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI00LA048](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI00LA048), Dec 17, 1999: Beech 35 (N5BB), Hanover, MI, substantial damage. Probable cause: fuel starvation and the pilot's improper fuel tank selector position. A factor was the swampy terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
