## Narrative

(-23) INCIDENT AT MIDLOTHIAN, TSA AIRPORT ON DECEMBER 30, 1999. THE AIRPLANE INVOLVED IN THIS INCIDENT WAS TOWING A GLIDER WITH A STUDENT PILOT AT THE CONTROLS. THE GLIDER LIFTED OFF AND CONTINUED TO CLIMB ABOVE THE FLIGHT PATH OF THE AIRPLANE. THE PILOT OF THE AIRPLANE STATED HE WAS ABOUT 10 TO 12 FEET ABOVE THE RUNWAY WHEN THE TAIL WAS PULLED UP CAUSING THE NOSE TO GO DOWN WITH THE PROPELLER STRIKING THE RUNWAY ABOUT 12 TIMES BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO RECOVER AND BRING THE AIRPLANE TO A STOP. THE PILOT ALSO STATED THAT IT REQUIRED A LOT OF BACK PRESSURE TO LIFT OFF, AND HE WAS LOOKING INHIS REAR VIEW MIRROR TO SEE WHAT THE GLIDER PILOT WAS DOING WHEN THE PROP STRUCK THE GROUND. WHEN THE PROP FIRST TOUCHED THE RUNWAY, THE PILOT SIMULTANEOUSLY RELEASED THE GLIDER AND CLOSED THE THROTTLE. THE GLIDER ILOT ALSO RELEASED FROM THE TOW PLANE AND LANDED SAFELY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO EITHER PILOT AND NO DAMAGE TO THE GLIDER. MINOR DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE AIRPLANE WITH THE PROP TIPS CURLED AND A SMALL PIECE MISSING FROM ONE GLADE. THERE WAS ALSO A SMALL PIECE OF METAL CUT FROM THE UNDER SIDE OF THE COWLING BY THE PROPELLER. AN OPERATIONS INSPECTOR AND AIRWORTHINESS INSPECTOR LOOKED AT THE AIRPLANE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE DAMAGE WAS ONLY MINOR. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION IS PLANNED FOR THE PILOT OF THE TOW PLANE. THE STUDENT WILL BE COUNSELED AND ADDITIONAL TRAINING WILL BE CONDUCTED PRIOR TO ANY MORE SOLO FLIGHTS. (PRECEDING REPORT WRITTEN BY MARGE CULWELL, OPERATIONS INSPECTOR, DALLAS FSDO)

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
