## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, DURING LANDING ON A SNOW COVERED LAKE WITH HIS SKI EQUIPPED CESSNA 180, THE FOLLOWING OCCURRED. WHEN THE LEFT SKI CONTACTED THE SNOW COVERED LAKE, THE AIRCRAFT YAWED SHARPLY. THE YAW EFFECT PLACED EXCESSIVE SIDE-LOAD ON THE SKI AND LANDING GEAR INSTANTLY DECELERATING THE AIRCRAFT SPEED. THE QUICK DECELERATION AND SIDE-LOAD CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO NOSE OVER ON ITS TOP. LEFT WING, VERTICAL STABILIZER AND RUDDER DAMAGE OCCURRED WHEN THE AIRCRAFT NOSEED OVER ON ITS TOP. AFTER THE ACCIDENT, THE PILOT CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF THE LANDING AREA. HE FOUND INDICATIONS THAT THE LEFT SKI STRUCK AN ICE PRESSURE RIDGE HIDDEN BY FRESHLY FALLEN SNOW.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC00LA026](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC00LA026), Feb 8, 2000: Cessna 180 (N4961A), Glennallen, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's selection of an unsuitable landing site on a frozen, snow-covered lake. A factor associated with the accident was an area of drifted snow at the landing site.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
