## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4)SHORTLY AFTER DEPARTURE FOR THE LOCAL FLIGHT, THE PILOT OBSERVED DRIZZLE, AND RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT FOR LANDING. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE EXPERIENCED A WIND SHEAR ON APPROACH TO THE RUNWAY. WEATHER DATA CONFIRMED A 180 DEGREE SHIFT IN THE WIND DIRECTION AT THE AIRPORT, WITHIN ONE HOUR. A WITNESS AT THE AIRPORT STATED THAT THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN BEYOND THE MIDPOINT OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE WENT OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY, INTO A FENCE. (-23) ON APRIL 6, 2000, AT 17:20 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, A CESSNA CE-172N, BEARING THE REGISTRATION NUMBER N738CG, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHEN IT STRUCK CHAIN LINK FENCE AT THE END OF RUNWAY 11 WHILE LANDING AT THE HARRIMAN AND WEST AIRPORT (AQW) IN NORTH ADAMS, MA. THE ONLY PERSON ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT WAS THE CERTIFICATED PRIVATE PILOT WHO SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. THE VFR FLIGHT DEPARTED HARRIMAN AND WEST AIRPORT AT 17:15 FOR THE PURPOSE OF PLEASURE FLIGHT AND LANDING PRACTICE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC00LA109](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC00LA109), Apr 6, 2000: Cessna 172 (N738CG), North Adams, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to obtain the proper touchdown point. A factor was a tailwind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
