## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, ENGINE QUIT. SWITCHED TANKS, RESTARTED ENGINE, ENGINE QUIT AGAIN. UNABLE TO RESTART ENGINE. MADE EMERGENCY LANDING ON GRAVEL BAR. INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER, REVEALED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. THE PILOT WAS RELYING ON A PILOT WEATHER BRIEFING OBTAINED FROM A FLIGHT SERVICE STATION WHICH DETAILED CONDITIONS OF A TAIL WIND ALONG HIS ROUTE OF FLIGHT. THE PILOT ENTERED AN UNFORECAST HEADWIND AND WAS RELYING ON THE FUEL GAUGES FOR FUEL MANAGEMENT. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE FUEL GAUGES WERE STICKING AND NOT PROVIDING ACCURATE INFORMATION TO THE PILOT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC00LA084](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC00LA084), Jul 9, 2000: Maule M-4-210C (N9855M), Chickaloon, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to refuel the airplane prior to fuel exhaustion. A factor associated with the accident was rough/uneven terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
