## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23)THE PILOT WAS FLYING EAST, DISPENSING MALATHION ON A COTTON CROP, WHEN HE COLLIDED WITH IRRIGATION SYSTEM. PILOT FAILED TO SEE THE IRRIGATION SPRINKLER IN TIME TO CLEAR IT, HE STARTED A CLIMB, BUT HIS LANDING GEAR WAS TORN OFF IN THE COLLISION. THE PILOT MADE A SMALL TURN TO THE RIGHT AND MADE AN IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY LANDING IN THE COTTON FIELD WITHOUT THE MAIN WHEELS ATTACHED. IT WAS MID AFTERNOON IN THE SUMMER AND THE PILOT WAS WATCHING FOR, AND TRYING TO AVOID THERMALS IN THE FORM OF "DUST DEVILS" OR "WHIRL WINDS". HIS ATTENTION WAS DIVERTED AND HE SAW THE IRRIGATIN SUSTEM TOO LATE TO AVOID CONTACT. THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURIED, BUT THE CARRY THROUGH SPAR AND THE RIGHT WING MAIN SPAR WERE DAMAGED WHEN THE LANDING GEAR WAS TORN OFF OR DURING THE EMERGENCY LANDING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW00LA257](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW00LA257), Sep 6, 2000: Air Tractor 402B (N6174H), Segraves, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance with the irrigation system. A factor was the whirlwind weather condition.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
