## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DEPARTURE FROM THE BIRCHWOOD AIRSTRIP, DURING THE INITIAL AMATEUR BUILT CERTIFICATION PROCESS, THE ENGINE QUIT AT 700 FEET MSL. THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED A SPIN. THE PILOT RECOVERED THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE SPIN AT TREETOP LEVEL. THE PILOT WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY GEAR UP LANDING IN ROUGH TERRAIN ON THE KNICK ARM MUDFLATS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC01LA008](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC01LA008), Oct 15, 2000: Weste Avid (N126DW), Chugiak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power due to a piston failure. Factors in the accident were an out-of-rig flight control system, an inadvertent stall, and no suitable terrain for a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
