## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED RUNWAY 31 AT SPI AND CLIMBED TO 500 FEET AMD STARTED ALEFT HAND TURN. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE ENGINE LOST POWER. THE TOWER WAS NOTIFIED THAT HE HAD AN EMERGENCY AND HE WAS GOING DOWN. THE PILOT CONTINUED A LEFT TURN EAST AND LINED UP WITH THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO THE CONTROL TOWER. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN SHORT OF THE ROAD IN A PLOWED FIELD, TRAVELED ACROSS THE FIELD AND AN AIRPORT PERIMETER ROAD AND ONTO TOWER ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT WINGS STRUCK BOTH SIDES OF THE OPEN SECURITY GATE AND CONTINUED APPROXIMATELY 25 YARDS BEFORE VEERING RIGHT INTO A 4 FOOT FENCE AND COMING TO REST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI01LA019](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI01LA019), Oct 21, 2000: Zenair CH2000 (N420ZA), Springfield, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loose carburetor heat control clamp bolt and carburetor heat not available to the pilot. Factors were the low altitude, the carburetor icing conditions, the fence and the security gate.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
