## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) UPON LANDING, LEFT GEAR FAILED AT JUNCTION OF WHEEL SPINDLE. THE ASSEMBLY SEPARATED FROM LANDING GEAR, AND A/C SLID OFF RUNWAY ON REMAINING STUB OF GEAR TUBE. INSPECTION OF LANDING GEAR DID NOT INDICATE ANY FAILURE OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY. AT POINT OF FAILURE THERE WAS AN AREA OF DISCOLORATION AND POSSIBLE CORROSION INDICATING A PRE-EXISTING CRACK IN THE TUBE. THIS AREA WAS APPROX. IN AN ARC OF 30 TO 45 DEGREES. THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A WEAKNESS IN THE TUBE THUS LEADING TO STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE COMPLETE TUBE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN01LA014](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN01LA014), Nov 13, 2000: Mooney M20J (N201JP), Longmont, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the total failure of the left main gear strut during the landing roll. A contributing factor was the 6-foot high snow bank that the airplane impacted when it left the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
