## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DECEMBER 22, 2000 AT APPROXIMATELY 1730 EST AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATUER BUILT ROTORCRAFT-GYROPLANE STRUCK A FENCE DURING AN ATTEMPTED TAKEOFF FROM THE OWNERS BACK YARD. THE AIRCRAFT WAS BEING OPERATED ON A 14 CFR PART 91 FLIGHT AND VFR CONDITIONS EXISTED AT THE TIME. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD MADE SEVERAL TAKEOFFS PREVIOUSLY FROM THE SITE, BUT STATED THAT IN THE PAST THEY HAD BEEN MADE SOLO OR WITH HIS SMALL CHILDREN ON BOARD. HE STATED THAT THIS WAS HIS FIRST ATTEMPT WITH AN ADULT PASSENGER AND THAT HIS PASSENGER WAS A LARGE INDIVIDUAL. HE FURTHER STATED THAT WHEN HE SAW THAT HE MIGHT NOT CLEAR THE FENCE, HE INITIATED A TURN WHICH EXACERBATED THE PROBLEM AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SETTLE PRIOR TO STRIKING THE FENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA01LA047](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA01LA047), Dec 22, 2000: Larry Groover Eagle (N8132L), Auburndale, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain adequate clearance during takeoff, which resulted in an inflight collision with a fence and substantial damage to the aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
