## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23)THIS FAR 121 FLIGHT WAS TO BE OPERATED AS UNITED EXPRESS (AIR WISCONSIN) 5626. DURING START OF HTE #2 ENGINE (INBOARD ON THE LEFT WING) A TORCHING EFFECT OCCURRED FROM THE TAILPIPE, WHICH PASSENGERS AND FLIGHT ATTENDANTS TOOK TO BE A SERIOUS ENGINE FIRE. THE PILOTS HAD NO COCKPIT INDICATION OF A FIRE. NEVERTHELESS, AN EVACUATION WAS ORDERED FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT, WHICH WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT INJURIES OF FURTHER INCIDENT. THE PILOTS SHUT DOWN THE #1 AND #2 ENGINES, AND SUPERVISED THE EVACUATION. NO EVIDENCE OF FIRE OUTSIDE OF THE TAILPIPE WAS FOUND. THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED AND TORN DOWN, BUT THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE TORCHING REMAINS UNDETERMINED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
