## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23)PILOT DEPARTED KEARNEY, NEBRASKA (EAR) VFR WITH A DESTINATION OF CHEYENNE WYOMING. ONE PASSENGER ON BOARD. APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES EAST OF EAR, THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH AND BEGAN LOSING POWER. THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND IN A CORN FIELD. THE LANDING WAS UNEVENTFUL UNTIL HE RAN INTO SOME DEEPER SNOW AT WHICH TIME THE AIRCRAFT STOOD ON ITS NOSE AND CONTINUED OVER ON ITS BACK. INVESTIGATION REVEALED EXHAUST VALVE GUIDE APPEARS TO HAVE SEIZED CONTRIBUTING TO THE ROUGH RUNNING ENGINE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI01LA095](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI01LA095), Feb 18, 2001: Piper PA-22-108 (N5886Z), Overton, NE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The open exhaust valve. Factors relating to the accident were the sticking exhaust valve guide and the snow drift the airplane encountered during the precautionary landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
