## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23)AFTER TAKEOFF, WHEN 'GEAR UP' WAS SELECTED, THE GEAR MOVED ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AND THEN STOPPED. THEN, THE PILOT SELECTED 'DOWN', BUT DID NOT GET A GREEN LIGHT. HE FLEW FROM WAVERLY, TN, WITH THE GEAR IN THAT POSITION. WHEN HE ARRIVED AT TOPEKA, HE ATTEMPTED TO EXTEND THE GEAR MANUALLY. HE DID NOT KNOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE, WHICH RESULTED IN THE GEAR NOT BEING IN THE LOCKED DOWN POSITION. AFTER TOUCHING DOWN, AS THE WEIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS APPLIED TO THE GEAR, THE LANDING GEAR FOLDED. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A MECHANICAL REASON FOR THE ORIGINAL FAILURE, IF THE PILOT HAD USED THE CORRECT MANUAL GEAR EXTENTSION PROCEDURE, THE LANDING WOULD HAVE BEEN NORMAL. THE PILOT'S MEDICAL CERTIFICATE HAD EXPIRED ON MARCH 31, 2001.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
