## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRPLANE WAS BEING OPERATED FROM A PRIVATE GRASS RUNWAY. THE RUNWAY IS ORIENTATED NORTH/SOUTH. THERE IS A RAILROAD BED ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RAILROAD BED ARE POWER LINES THAT ARE VISIBLE BY THE ORANGE BALLS ATTACHED. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT ON THE AIRPLANE. HE WAS TAKING OFF IN A SOUTHERLY HEADING. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD LIFTED OFF THE SURFACE BUT REALIZED THAT HE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGHT ALTITUDE OR CLIMB CAPABILITY TO CLEAR THE POWER LINES. HE DECIDED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN TO PUT THE AIRPLANE DOWN IN A SOYBEAN FIELD THAT WAS ADJACENT TO THE RUNWAY. HIS AIRPLANE WAS TOO LOW TO THE GROUND TO EXECUTE THE TURN PROPERLY. THE LEFT WING CAUGHT THE GROUND AND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO TUMBLE FORWARD AND OVER COMING TO REST UPSIDE DOWN. THE PILOT DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI01LA164](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI01LA164), Jun 8, 2001: Boeing Stearman A-75 (N4558N), Marissa, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's manuever to avoid obstructions and his failure to abort takeoff. The pilot's failure to establish adequate climb, and the transmission wire are contributing factors.
