## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT OF EXPERIMENTAL GLIDER N76SP, A SCHWEIZER ASW-20, ON THE LAST FLIGHT OF THE DAY, DECIDED TO LAND LONG TO FINISH CLOSE TO THE HANGAR. ON THE APPROACH THE PILOT EXTENDED THE LANDING GEAR. AS HE CONTINUED HE REALIZED HIS SPEED WAS TOO FAST. HE SAID HE WAS A BIT DISTRACTED BY THE GUSTY CROSS-WIND CONDITIONS. HE FORCED THE GLIDER TO GROUND, BOUNCED SEVERAL TIMES. HE PULLED WHAT HE THOUGHT WERE THE SPOILERS, BUT IN FACT HE HAD PULLED THE LANDING GEAR OUT OF ITS DOWN AND LOCK POSITION. WHEN THE PILOT REALIZED HE WAS RUNNING OUT OF REUNWAY HE INTENTIONALLY GROUND-LOOPED THE AIRCRAFT BREAKING OFF THE TAIL SECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT, AND DAMAGING THE GEAR, GEAR DOORS, TAIL WHEEL AND NOSE SECTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI01LA168](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI01LA168), Jun 16, 2001: Schleicher ASW-20 (N76SP), HIghland, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to extend the spoilers during landing approach, which resulted in a touchdown at a higher than normal airspeed. An additional cause was the intentional ground loop/swerve maneuver…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
