## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON JUNE 22, 2001, AT 2000 CENTRAL DAYLIGHT TIME, A RENEGADE SPIRIT, N730JB, PILOTED BY A STUDENT PILOT, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED FOLLOWING A FORCED LANDING IN A FIELD. THE PILOT WAS PERFORMING AEROBATICS WHEN HE HEARD A BANG, AT WHICH TIME THE AIRPLANE EXHIBITED A LEFT ROLLING TENDENCY. HE THEN ACTIVATED A BALLISTIC PARACHUTE SYSTEM ABOARD THE AIRPLANE. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THE 14 CFR PART 91 PERSONAL FLIGHT WAS NOT OPERATING ON A FLIGHT PLAN. THE STUDENT PILOT REPORTED NO INJURIES. THE LOCAL FLIGHT DEPARTED FROM THE PILOT'S PRIVATE AIRSTRIP NEAR LYNN CENTER, ILLINOIS. (-23) STUDENT PILOT, WHOSE CERTIFICATE HAD EXPIRED AND DOES NOT SHOW EVIDENCE OF CURRENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION, WAS DOING LOOPS OVER HIS HOUSE WHEN HE HEARD A NOISE LIKE A CONTROL CABLE SNAPPING. HE COULD NOT CONTROL AIRCRAFT. AT ABOUT 400 AGL HE DEPLOYED BALLISTIC PARACHUTE INSTALLED IN AIRPLANE AND HIT GROUND WITH TAIL FIRST AND THEN WING. HE WAS ACTING ALONE AND NOT UNDER SUPERVISION OF HIS INSTRUCTOR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI01FA186](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI01FA186), Jun 23, 2001: Bowman Renegade Spirit (N730JB), Lynn Center, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: the in-flight deformation of the left wing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
