## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT HAD 3 PERSONS ON BOARD, TAKE OFF AREA WAS A BEACH WIDE, FLAT AND SLIGHTLY SOFT SAND AND GRAVEL. AIRCRAFT BROKE GROUND ONLY IN GROUND EFFECT. WIND DOWN DRAFT WOULD NOT ALLOW AIRCRAFT TO CLIMB AND IT SETTLED BACK ON GROUND AT END OF FLAT TAKE OFF AREA. AIRCRAFT STRUCK A LOG WHICH WAS HORIZONTAL TO RUNWAY. NOSE WHEEL WAS OVER THE LOG, BUT MAINS WERE BEHIND AND SHEARED OFF. AIRCRAFT SAT ON GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC01LA073](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC01LA073), Jun 23, 2001: Piper PA-28-140 (N9581W), Haines, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's selection of unsuitable terrain for takeoff. Factors in the accident were soft terrain, and the pilot's delay in aborting the takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
