## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 27, 2001, AT 1030 MDT, PILOT SCOTT JEFFERY KAATS, CERTIFICATE #558984824M ATTEMPTED TO LAND N872CC, APIPER PA-18-150 AT THE BRYCE CANYON AIRPORT (BCE) ON RUNWAY 3. THE WINDS WERE 12 KNOTS AT 120 DEGREES. ONE WHEEL TOUCHED DWON BUT THE PILOT STATED IT DIDN'T "FEEL" RIGHT. HE GAVE THE ENGINE FULL POWER AND LIFTED OFF TO TRY AGAIN. THE AIRCRAFT CIRCLED THE FIELD AND ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON RUNWAY 21 THIS TIME. THE AIRCRAFT ONCE AGAIN TOUCHED DOWN ON ONE WHEEL AND IT STARTED TO BE PUSHED TO THE LEFT. A GUST OF WIND HIT THE AIRCRAFT AND IT VEERED TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT GAVE A HARD RIGHT RUDDER TO CORRECT FOR THIS AND THE AIRCRAFT GROUND LOOPED. THE LEFT WING SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE INCLUDING TWO BENT SPARS AND A BINDING AILERON WITH LIMITED TRAVEL. THIS ACCIDENT WAS DISCOVERED WHEN AN IA, ALLEN WOODHOUSE, CALLED FOR A SPECIAL FLIGHT PERMIT TO FERRY THE AIRCRAFT TO THE SPANISH FORK AIRPORT (U77) FOR REPAIR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN01LA123](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN01LA123), Jun 27, 2001: Piper PA-18-150 (N872CC), Bryce Canyon, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing. A contributing factor was the crosswind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
