## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING A SUPERVISED SOLO FLIGHT, THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN ON RUNWAY 10 AND DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT WHILE THE PILOT WAS TRYING TO RETRACT THE FLAPS. ONCE OFF OF THE RUNWAY, THE STUDENT PILOT DID NOT APPLY BRAKES BECAUSE HIS FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR HAD TOLD HIM NOT TO APPLY BRAKES IF THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO SKID. THE STUDENT PILOT INCORRECTLY INTREPRETED THIS TO INCLUDE SITUATIONS WHERE THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT TRAVELED PARALLEL TO THE RUNWAY ON THE NORTH SIDE, FOR APPROXIMATELY 700' (WITH NO BRAKE APPLICATION) BEFORE TURNING LEFT 90 DEGREES AND COMING TO A STOP IN A DITCH. THE IMPACT WITH THE DITCH AND A UTILITY POLE BENT THE LEFT WING SPAR, AND CRUMPLED THE FIRE WALL AT THE ENGINE ATTACHING POINTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL01LA069](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL01LA069), Jun 29, 2001: Cessna 177 (N3381T), Milledgeville, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control and the subsequent collision with an object during an attempted landing. A factor was porpoise induced oscillation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
