## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT ATTEMPTED TAKE-OFF ON RUNWAY 24 (3011 FEET LONG) WITH CONTROL WHEEL GUST LOCK INSTALLED. AS THE AIRCRAFT REACHED TAKE-OFF SPEED (70 KNOTS), THE PILOT APPLIED GENTLE BACK PRESSURE TO ROTATE TO CLIMB ATTITUDE. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO THIS CONTROL INPUT SO HE BEGAN TRIMMING THE NOSE UP WITH ELECTRIC TRIM AND MANUAL TRIM WHEEL. THIS DID NOT CORRECT THE SITUATION EITHER. BY THIS TIME HE WAS ACCELERATING THROUGH 100 KNOTS AIRSPEED AND HAD USED UP CONSIDERABLE RUNWAY (APPROXIMATELY 1500 FEET). HE STATED THAT WHEN HE REALIZED HE NEEDED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF HE REDUCED POWER AND USED MAXIMUM BRAKING. HE WAS UNABLE TO STOP ON THE REMAINING RUNWAY AND DEPARTED THE DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY 24 COMING TO REST APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET BEYOND THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC01LA183](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC01LA183), Jul 22, 2001: Beech BE-36 (N3680U), Biddeford, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight inspection, which resulted in an attempted takeoff with a control column lock installed.

## Other reports on N3680U (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19910403016759I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910403016759I), Apr 3, 1991: Beech A36 (N3680U), Fort Pierce, FL, Minor damage. Propeller struck a taxiway light while exiting runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
