## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE STUDENT PILOT/HELICOPTER OWNER AND A PASSENGER WERE FERRYING THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE OWNER'S FARM IN TONGANOXIE, KANSAS, TO ROLLA, MISSOURI, WHERE IT WAS TO RECEIVE AN OVERDUE ANNUAL INSPECTION. IN THE VICINITY OF BALLARD, MISSOURI, ENGINE POWER WAS APPARENTLY LOST DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION AND THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED IN A FARM FIELD, FATALLY INJURING BOTH OCCUPANTS. THEAIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND AT APPROXIMATELY A 30-DEGREE NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE, AND ROLLED INVERTED BEFORE COMING TO A REST. THE STUDENT PILOT/HELICOPTER OWNER HAD NEVER BEEN AUTHORIZED FOR SOLO. HIS PASSENGER HELD A STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE ISSUED IN 1989 WITH ABOUT 25 FLIGHT HOURS (CATEGORY AND CLASS UNKNOWN). THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED APPROXIMATELY 20 NM SHORT OF ITS INTENDED FUEL STOP AT THE CLINTON MEMORIAL AIRPORT (GLY), CLINTON, MISSOURI. A BELL 47 EXPERIENCED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR LATER CALCULATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WOULD NOT LIKELY HAVE FLOWN THE DISTANCE FROM TONGANOXIE TO CLINTON (160NM) WITHOUT EXHAUSTING ITS FUEL SUPPLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
