## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 07/23/2001 FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR SHERI BAXTER WAS CONDUCTING A HIGH PERFORMANCE CHECK OUT FOR MR. BRUCE COURY, A RATED PRIVATE PILOT. WHILE ACTING AS CFI DURING THE CHECK OUT, MISS BAXTER WAS UNABLE TO RECOVER THE PLANE FROM A BAD LANDING BEING PERFORMED BY MR. COURY. THIS RESULTED IN A HARD LANDING AND CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. THE LANDING WAS MADE TO RUNWAY 18. DURING THIS LANDING THE RIGHT MAIN AND NOSE GEAR BOTH COLLAPSED. DAMAGE WAS ALSO SUSTAINED TO THE LEFT WING, LEFT AILERON AND TAIL SECTION. THE AIRCRAFT ENDED UP IN THE GRASS ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC01LA186](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC01LA186), Jul 23, 2001: Mooney M20J (N4223H), Mitchellville, MD, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's failure to maintain control of the airplane during an aborted landing, and her delay in remedial action. A factor related to the accident was the excessive trim setting.

## Other reports on N4223H (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19860711066109I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19860711066109I), Jul 11, 1986: Mooney M20J (N4223H), Rutland, VT. Lost power after takeoff, returned to runway. Water in fuel, aircraft had prior history of water in the fuel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
