## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATED HE WAS ATTEMPTING A SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF AT ALLISON WOODS, A GRASS STRIP NEAR STATESVILLE, NC. AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE PREPARED PORTION OF THE GRASS STRIP AND RAN INTO A TREELINE. METAR WEATHER REPORT RECORDED AT 1642 EDT AT STATESVILLE MUNI (SVH), APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE GRASS STRIP, SHOWED SCATTERED CLOUDS, WITH THE WINDS FROM 180 DEGREES AT 6 KNOTS. IN ATTEMPTING THE TAKEOFF, THE PILOT STATED THAT EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN DRIFTING TO THE LEFT. HE APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER AND BRAKE TO COUNTER THE DRIFT, BUT AT APPROXIMATELY 55 KNOTS THE AIRCRAFT VEERED ABRUPTLY TO THE LEFT, AND THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO COUNTER THE DRIFT. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE PREPARED PORTION OF THE GRASS STRIP, THE LEFT WING IMPACTED THE TREELINE, THEN SPUN THE AIRCRAFT AROUND, SO THAT THE RIGHT WING CAME TO REST IN THE TREELINE. THE THROTTLE WAS FOUND IN THE FULL OPEN POSITION, INDICATING THAT THE PILOT DID NOT REDUCE POWER TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA01LA209](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA01LA209), Aug 4, 2001: Cessna 152 (N96064), Statesville, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's attempted takeoff with a tail wind and his failure to maintain directional control of the airplane during takeoff resulting in the airplane veering to the left and colliding with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
