## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT APPROXIMATELY 1945 HOURS ON 08/14/01, N29JB, A ICA FRASOV IS-28-B2 GLIDER CRASHED AT THE WENATCHEE, WA AIRPORT. THE PILOT (A PRIVATE PILOT APPLICANT) WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON A GRASS RUNWAY PARALLEL TO AND ON THE EAST END OF RUNWAY 07-25. THE PILOT TURNED FROM THE DOWNWIND LEG TO THE BASE LEG TOO SOON AND WAS CONSEQUENTLY TOO HIGH TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL LANDING ON THE GRASS RUNWAY 07-25. THE PILOT SLIPPED THE AIRCRAFT WHILE ON THE FINAL APPROACH LEG OF THE LANDING WITH FLAPS, SPOILERS, AND LANDING GEAR EXTENDED IN AN ATTEMPT TO LAND ON THE GRASS RUNWAY 07-25. ON SHORT FINAL THE EXAMINER, DETERMINING THAT AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING WAS IMMINENT, TOOK THE CONTROLS AND RETRACTED THE SPOILERS. THE AIRCRAFT THEN MADE A SLIGHT R/H TURN TOWARDS THE ASPHALT RUNWAY 07-25. WITH THE AIRCRAFT HEADING IN AN EASTERLY DIRECTION AND FOR AN UNDETERMINED REASON, THE LEFT WING TIP CONTACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 60 FEET EAST OF ON CENTERLINE WITH RUNWAY 07-25. APPROXIMATELY 76 FEET PAST THE END OF THE RUNWAY, THE MAIN LANDING GEAR CONTACTED THE GROUND, THE AIRCRAFT PIVOTED TO THE LEFT COMING TO REST APPROXIMATELY 135 FEET PAST THE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA01LA150](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA01LA150), Aug 15, 2001: I.C.A. Brasov IS-28B2 (N29JB), Wenatchee, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure to maintain clearance from terrain during a low altitude turn. The second pilot overshooting the runway was a contributing factor to the accident.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
