## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 15, 2001, AT APPROXIMATELY 1730 MDT, AN AMATEUR BUILT S-1, PILOTED BY BOYD W. SIMMONS WAS LANDING EAST BOUND ON THE JEROME AIRPORT, JEROME, ID. UPON TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT VEERED TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT APPLIED LEFT RUDDER WITH NO EFFECT, THEN HE APPLIED FULL LEFT RUDDER AND LEFT TOE BRAKE WITH NO POSITIVE EFFECT. THE AIRCRAFT THEN LEFT THE RUNWAY (TO THE RIGHT) DOWN THE INCLINE FROM THE RUNWAY IN THE GRASS TOWARDS THE RUNWAY TURN OFF. THE AIRCRAFT THE STARTED UP THE INCLINE TOWARD THE RUNWAY TURN OFF WHEN THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WHEEL STRUCK A DRAINAGE CULVERT STOPPING THE AIRCRAFT AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE LOWER FUSELAGE LONGERON AND ALLOWING THE PROP TO MAKE SEVERAL GROUND STRIKES BEFORE DAMAGING THE SPINNER. UPON INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT AT JEROME AIRPORT ON AUGUST 16, 2001, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE SPINNER, LEFT MAIN GEAR WHEEL PANT AND SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER AND SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE LEFT LOWER FUSELAGE LONGERON. THERE WAS ALSO OBSERVED TO BE A BULGE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE FUSELAGE OUT ON THE LOWER LEFT QUARTER OF THE FIRE WALL. A FUNCTIONAL TEST WAS MADE OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM WITH THE RUDDER IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION. BOTH BRAKES WORKED. AN INSPECTION OF THE RUDDER REVEALED THAT THE RUDDER STOPS WOULD NOT EQUAL ALLOWING ASYMMETRICAL RUDDER MOVEMENT WITH THE LEFT RUDDER THROW BEING GREATER THAN THE RIGHT. THIS IN TURN CAUSED THE LEFT RUDDER PEDDLE TO MOVE FURTHER TOWARD THE FIRE WALL CAUSING LESS TOE BRAKE TRAVEL. BECAUSE OF THE REDUCED TRAVEL, THE BULGE IN THE FIRE WALL WAS CAUSED BY THE TOE BRAKE HITTING IT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
