## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 08/25/01, DAVID HIATT (253-333-8143) DEPARTED AUBURN AIRPORT. WHILE OVER LAKE TAPPS, THE ENGINE QUIT. HE MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON LAKE TAPPS PARKWAY E. HIGHWAY. AIRCRAFT HAD SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. NO INJURIES TO PILOT. ON 09/27/01 MR. HIATT CAME TO THE FSDO WITH PILOT CERTIFICATE AND FLIGHT LOG. HE HAD NO MAINTENANCE OR AIRCRAFT LOG BOOKS FOR THE AIRCRAFT OR ENGINE. HE SAID HE BOUGHT AIRCRAFT FOR PARTS THEN REBUILT FROM A WRECK. HE REMOVED THE OLD DATA PLATE AND WAS MAKING HIS OWN. HE DID NOT HAVE AN AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE. HE CHANGED THE "N" NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER ON AIRCRAFT. I REQUESTED AIRCRAFT RECORDS FROM OKC ON N72GS, S/N 78 (THAT WAS THE PREVIOUS OWNER). THE AIRCRAFT IS NOW N34DG, S/N SQ-01. I HAVE RECEIVED RECORDS ON BOTH "N" NUMBERS FROM OKC. MR. HIATT SAYS HE HAS CURRENT MEDICAL BUT CAN'T FIND IT. NTSB HAD CARBURATOR TESTED AND FOUND TO BE ADJUSTED TOO LEAN TO SUPPORT ENGINE IDLE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA01LA157](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA01LA157), Aug 25, 2001: Super Quickie 2 (N34DQ), Bonney Lake, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: Improper carburetor adjustment resulting in a total loss of engine power while in a descent configuration. Factors include an excessively lean mixture setting and unsuitable terrain for landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
