## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING AERIAL APPLICATION, THE PILOT COMPLETED A PASS AND BEGAN TO PULL UP. A SINGLE BACKFIRE WAS HEARD AND THE PILOT CONTINUED HIS CLIMB TO 200-300 FEET. HE CIRCLED FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING NORMAL. THE PILOT THEN MADE ANOTHER PASS OVER THE FIELD. AFTER THIS PASS, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO BACKFIRE AND RUN ROUGH WITH LITTLE POWER OUTPUT. A LANDING IN THE FIELD WAS ATTEMPTED AND THE MAIN GEAR SUNK IN SOFT DIRT AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER ON ITS BACK. VISUAL INSPECTION REVEALED A SHEARED SIMMS COUPLING ON THE RIGHT MAGNETO. THE COUPLING WAS SHEARED ON THE MAGNETO SIDE. THE MAGNETO WAS DISASSEMBLED AND SMALL SLIVERS OF METAL WAS FOUND IN AND AROUND THE AMATURE. SCORING WAS FOUND ON THE ARMATURE. ONE OF THE SLIVERS WAS PLACED BETWEEN THE ARMATURE AND COIL RESULTING IN IMMEDIATED BINDING OF THE ARMATURE. THE SOURCE OF THE METAL COULD NOT BE DETERMINED AND NO OTHER DEFECTS IN THE MAGNETO WERE FOUND. THE EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THE METAL ENTERED THE ARMATURE AND COIL CAUSING IT TO BIND AND SHEAR THE COUPLING. THE MAGNETO JUMPED TIMING AND FIRED RANDOMLY CAUSING THE ENGINE LOSS OF POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: the partial failure of the magneto drive coupling while maneuvering, which resulted in a loss of engine power and a forced landing. A contributing factor to the accident was the lack of suitable…
