## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS ON A LEFT BASE LEG VECTOR FOR AN ILS RWY 34 APPROACH TO ASHEVILLE REGIONAL AIRPORT (AVL), AND ASSIGNED 5,100 FEET ALTITUDE. ATC CONTROLLER ADVISED THE PILOT THAT HE WAS BELOW ASSIGNED ALTITUDE AND OFF HEADING. PILOT RESPONDED THAT HE WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY "GETTING IT UP" AND THAT THE AIR WAS ROUGH. WITHOUT REPORTING HIS INTENTIONS THE PILOT DESCENDED AND MADE A LEFT 360-DEGREE TURN, STARTED ANOTHER TURN AND THEN IMPACTED THE SIDE OF PINNACLE MOUNTAIN AT APPROXIMATELY 3,093 FEET. THE PILOT WAS POSSIBLY TRYING TO FLY UNDER THE CLOUD COVER, AT NIGHT IN THE MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. AVC CLOUD COVER, 13NM TO THE NORTH, WAS 3600 FEET AGL (2165 + 3600 = 5800 FEET MSL). PILOT AND AIRCRAFT RECORDS NOT LOCATED. TIMES NOT KNOWN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL01FA109](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL01FA109), Sep 15, 2001: Cessna T-210F (N6740R), Hendersonville, NC, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to follow the air traffic controllers verbal instructions pertaining to heading and minimum safe vectoring altitude while being vectored for an ILS approach to his destination…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
