## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON OCTOBER 3, 2001, AT 1220 MOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT TIME, A HAMILTON GENESIS, EXPERIMENTAL HOMEBUILT AIRPLANE, N715MP, IMPACTED THE TERRAIN FOLLOWING A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER NEAR GRANTS, NEW MEXICO. THE AIRPLANE WAS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE PILOT UNDER CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS PART 91. THE PRIVATE PILOT, SOLE OCCUPANT, RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES, AND THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE PLANNED CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, AND A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED. THE FLIGHT DEPARTED GRANTS AT 1815. (-23) ON 10/03/01, AT APPROXIMATELY 1220 MDT, N715MP, AN EXPERIMENTAL INOVATION GENSIS, ON DEPARTURE FROM THE GRANTS-MILAN AIRPORT, GRANTS, NEW MEXICO, EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER, THUS IMPACTING THE TERRAIN APPROXIMATELY 3.5 NM NW OF THE GRANTS-MILAN AIRPORT. THE PRIVATE PILOT WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCRAFT AND RECEIVED A BROKEN TAIL BONE AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED. THE FLIGHT WAS CONDUCTED UNDER VMC CONDITIONS AND A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED. (.4) THE EXPERIMENTAL HOMEBUILT AIRPLANE IMPACTED TERRAIN FOLLOWING A PARTIAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DURING THE CLIMB TO CRUISE OVER ROUGH TERRAIN. THE THROTTLE CABLE MOVEMENT WAS 1/2-INCH IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHEN THE THROTTLE CONTROL WAS FULL FORWARD IN THE COCKPIT. THE AIRPLANE HAD NOT BEEN FLOWN IN SEVERAL MONTHS, AND HAD NOT RECEIVED A CONDITION INSPECTION IN OVER A YEAR. NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO OBTAIN A COMPLETED PILOT/OPERATOR AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT REPORT (NTSB FORM 6120.1/2) WERE UNSUCCESSFUL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW02LA002](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW02LA002), Oct 3, 2001: Hamilton Genesis (N715MP), Grants, NM, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loose throttle cable resulting in a partial loss of engine power. Contributing factors were the pilot's failure to perform the required yearly condition inspection prior to flight and the lack of…
