## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING A LOCAL FLIGHT FROM (9D4) TO (LNS) THE PILOT NOTICED THE PROPELLER RPM BEGIN TO INCREASE BY ITSELF, SO HE RESET IT TO 2200. AFTERWARDS THE PROPELLER BEGAN TO LOSE RPM THEN STARTED LOSING POWER. THE PILOT TURNED THE AIRCRAFT TOWARDS A SUITABLE FARM FIELD, CONTACTED LNS-ATCT AND COMPLETED HIS EMERGENCY PROCEDURES. THE AIRCRAFT MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING INTO A HARVESTED CORNFIELD WITHOUT DAMAGE OR INJURY. INVESTIGATION AT THE SITE REVEALED AN INTERNAL ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE SUBJECT AIRCRAFT WAS NEW WITH ONLY 93.5 HOURS TOTAL TIME. AN ENGINE DISASSEMBLY INSPECTION CONDUCTED ON 10/17/2001 AT TEXTRON LYCOMING, WILLIAMSPORT, PA, REVEALED THAT THE CORK GASKET USED ON THE REPLACEMENT VACCUUM PUMP INSTALLED AT 5 HOURS TOTAL TIME FAILED. THE OIL PORTED TO LOWER VACCUUM PUMP PAD WAS ALLOWED TO LEAK OUT, DEPLETING THE ENGINE OIL SYSTEM, RESULTING IN ENGINE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURING DISTRICT OFFICE, INSPECTOR, RON NAYLOR, IS SUBMITTING A SAFETY RECOMMENDATION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
