## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT PILOT LOST CONTROL AFTER LANDING ON RUNWAY 11, WITH A CROSSWIND AND STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT, APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET SOUTH OF RUNWAY. (.19) ON OCTOBER 21, 2001, ABOUT 1450 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, A PIPER PA-28-160, N5725W, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHILE LANDING AT THE UPSHUR COUNTY REGIONAL AIRPORT, BUCKHANNON, WEST VIRGINIA. THE CERTIFICATED STUDENT PILOT WAS NOT INJURED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED FOR THE LOCAL INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT CONDUCTED UNDER 14 CFR PART 91. ACCORDING TO A FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) INSPECTOR, THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 11, WHEN THE AIRPLANE SUDDENLY DEPARTED THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY ONTO THE GRASS. THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED INTO AN EMBANKMENT, SHEARED OFF THE NOSE GEAR, AND CAME TO REST UPRIGHT. A FIRE DEVELOPED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND WAS EXTINGUISHED BY THE PILOT. EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE BY THE FAA INSPECTOR REVEALED THAT BESIDES THE LANDING GEAR DAMAGE, THE FIREWALL WAS BUCKLED, THE PROPELLER TIPS WERE CURLED, AND SPAR DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING WAS OBSERVED. THE RECORDED WEATHER AT A NEARBY AIRPORT, ABOUT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, INCLUDED WINDS FROM 300 DEGRE ES AT 9 KNOTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC02LA016](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC02LA016), Oct 21, 2001: Piper PA-28-160 (N5725W), Buckhannon, WV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control while landing. A factor related to the accident were the gusting wind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
