THE AIRLINE TRANSPORT RATED CAPTAIN, AIRLINE TRANSPORT RATED FIRST OFFICER, 3 CABIN ATTENDANTS, AND 84 PASSENGERS WERE NOT INJURED. THE AIRPLANE IS REGISTERED TO INTERNATIONAL LEASE FINANCE CORPORATION OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, AND IS OPERATED BY AMERICAL WEST AIRLINES OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED FOR THE TITLE 14 CFR PART 121 SCHEDULED PASSENGER FLIGHT. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM THE GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT, HOUSTON, TEXAS, AT 0610, AND WAS DESTINED FOR THE PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, PHOENIX, ARIZONA. ACCORDING TO INITIAL REPORTS, THE FLIGHT CREW RECEIVED AN "ENGINE OIL FILTER BYPASS" FAULT MESSAGE, FOLLOWED BY A "HIGH OIL PRESSURE" INDICATION FOR THE #1 ENGINE. THE MESSAGE AND INDICATION WERE FOLLOWED BY VISIBLE SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT AND CABIN, AND A "HIGH VIBRATION." THE THROTTLE FOR THE #1 ENGINE WAS REDUCED TO IDLE, AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED, AND THE FLIGHT DIVERTED TO THE MIDLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. WHILE ON APPROACH TO MIDLAND, THE MIDLAND AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER PERSONNEL OBSERVED "WHITE SMOKE, BUT NO FLAMES" EMANATING FROM THE #1 ENGINE. THE FLIGHT LANDED, THE ENGINES WERE SHUTDOWN, AND AN EMERGENCY EVACUATION ENSUED. INTIAL REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE R1 DOOR WAS OPENED; HOWEVER, THE EMERGENCY SLIDE DID NOT DEPLOY UNTIL THE CAPTAIN FORCED THE DOOR OPEN TWICE. THE PASSENGERS DEPLANED VIA THE L1 AND L2 EMERGENCY SLIDES, AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. R2 DOOR WAS NOT OPENED AS PART OF THE EVACUATION.
