## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON NOVEMBER 9, 2001, AT 1809 EDT, A CIRRUS SR20, N76CP, REGISTERED TO CFP ASSOCIATES, EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE, ENROUTE TO FORT MYERS, FLORIDA, WHILE ON A PART 91 PERSONAL FLIGHT. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE AND THE TWO PASSENGERS AND PRIVATE PILOT WERE NOT INJURED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA, ON NOVEMBER 9, 2001, AT 1730 HOURS. THE PILOT REPORTED A LOUD ENGINE NOISE, ENGINE OVERSPEED, LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE, OIL COVERING THE WINDSHIELD, AND A JAMMED THROTTLE WHILE BEING VECTORED AROUND FORT MYERS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (RSW) TO HIS INTENDED DESTINATION AT PAGE FIELD (FMY). HE REQUESTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING INTO RSW AND LANDED ON RUNWAY 24. INVESTIGATION DISCLOSED THAT FAILURE OF A CONNECTING ROD BOLT AND THE RESULTING EJECTION OF COMPONENTS THROUGH THE CRANKCASE CAUSED LOSS OF SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL, LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE SUFFICIENT TO PREVENT PROPER OPERATION OF THE CONSTANT SPEED PROP, AND IMPACT DAMAGE TO THE THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE SUFFICIENT TO LIMIT FULL TRAVEL. MINOR NON-STRUCTURAL CRACKING OF THE RIGHT WING GAP FAIRING WAS CAUSED BY THE HARDER THAN NORMAL LANDING. A TEARDOWN INSPECTION CONDUCTED BY THE ENGINE MANUFACTURER, TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL, REVEALED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS WERE NOT TORQUED TO SPECIFICATIONS. TELEDYNE IS REVIEWING THE DATA AND WILL PUBLISH A FULL REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
