## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON NOV. 13, 2001, MR. PHIL KRESS WAS THE OPERATOR AND SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE ULTRA-LIGHT VEHICLE THAT CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF TO WHICH MR. KRESS SUCCUMBED TO HIS INJURIES AT THE SCENE. THE UNREGISTERED, SINGLE PLACE, WOOD AND FABRIC CONSTRUCTION ROTAX POWERED VEHICLE WAS IDENTIFIED AS A HOMEMADE "SORRELL SNS-2 'GUPPY'". IT WAS REPORTED BY WITNESSES THAT DURING CLIMB-OUT THE VEHICLE WAS "MUSHING" PRIOR TO THE RIGHT HAND TURN IN WHICH RESULTED IN A DEPARTURE TYPE STALL. ANOTHER WITNESS STATED THAT THE ENGINE POPPED AND WENT SILENT AFTER MULTIPLE THROTTLE ADJUSTMENTS PRIOR TO ENTERING INTO THE SPIN. IT WAS NOTED AT THE SCENE THAT THE PROPELLER, WHICH WAS NOT COMPOSED OF METAL, WAS NOT VISIBLY DAMAGED IN ANY WAY. THE WEATHER WAS OF NO FACTOR AS IT WAS MOSTLY CLEAR AND APPROXIMATELY 55 DEGREES F, THE WIND WAS LIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AT 10 TO 15 DEGREES OF THE NOSE DURING TAKE-OFF.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
