## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) COMING TO THE TRAFFIC PATTERN AT SAN CARLOS (SQL) THE PILOT OPERATED THE SWITCH TO LOWER THE LANDING GEAR. HE HEARD NO MOTOR NOISE, NOR DID THE RED GEAR UP LIGHT EXTINGUISH. AFTER CYCLING THE SWITCH A COUPLE OF TIMES, HE ADVISED THE TOWER OF THE SITUATION, AND CANCELED IFR. HE THE ATTEMPTED TO LOWER THE GEAR WITH THE EMERGENCY MANUAL EXTENSION MECHANISM WITH NO RESULTS. BECAUSE SAN CARLOS IS A SINGLE RUNWAY AIRPORT, THE PILOT DECIDED STOCKTON (SCK) WAS A BETTER CHOICE, TWO RUNWAYS, EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT, AND A MOONEY SERVICE CENTER, TOP GUN WHO COULD ASSIST TROUBLE SHOOTING THE GEAR EXTENSION PROBLEM. THE PILOT ADVISED SCK TOWER OF THE SITUATION AND REQUESTED THAT TOP GUN AVIATION BE CONTACTED FOR ASSISTANCE. TALKING WITH MECHANICS, SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS WERE TRIED TO GET THE LANDING GEAR DOWN BUT TO NO AVAIL. DECISION WAS MADE TO MAKE A GEAR UP LANDING ON RUNWAY 11L. PILOT EXECUTED EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AND LANDED, SKIDDING 50 TO 60 FEET BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED NO POWER TO THE LANDING GEAR MOTOR. MOTOR CHECKED OK ON THE BENCH. AND THE MANUAL GEAR EXTENSION SPLINES WERE WORN BEYOND OPERATIONAL LIMITS. MDR TO FOLLOW. END

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
