## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 11/28/2001 AT APPROXIMATELY 1210, A 1959 CESSNA 310, N1811H, EXPERIENCED A GEAR UP LANDING AT COMPTON AIRPORT IN COMPTON, CA. THE PILOT, AND ONLY OCCUPANT ON BOARD WAS MR. STANLEY HOFFMAN, WHO, BY HIS OWN ADMISSION, WAS DISTRACTED ON FINAL APPROACH AND NEGLECTED TO LOWER THE GEAR. THE FLIGHT HAD ORIGINATED FROM FULLERTON AIRPORT, IN FULLERTON CA. MR. HOFFMAN WAS FLYING TO LOOK AT ANOTHER AIRPLANE. UPON ARRIVAL TO COMPTON AIRPORT HE PLANNED HIS APPROACH TO LAND ON RUNWAY 7 AND HAD LOWERED HIS LANDING GEAR AT THAT TIME. AFTER OBSERVING A HELICOPTER LANDING ON RUNWAY 25L HE DECIDED TO MODIFY HIS PATTERN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 25. AS HE WAS FLYING A SOUTH DOWNWIND, A CESSNA WAS MAKING AN APPROACH TO RUNWAY 25L. HE DECIDED TO SIDESTEP TO RUNWAY 25R TO MAKE HIS APPROACH AND LANDING. AFTER MAKING THE SIDESTEP, MR. HOFFMAN STATED THAT HE NEGLECTED TO RE-CHECK HIS GEAR, WHICH HE HAD RAISED EARLIER. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED ON RUNWAY 25R WITH THE LANDING GEAR IN THE RETRACTED POSITION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
