## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) OWNER (LARRY JOE GRANT) WAS BEING INSTRUCTED BY (JOHN ADRIAN HARRINGTON) IN THE OPERATION OF THE AIRCRAFT FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES. AIRCRAFT IS BASED AT THE SEBRING, FLORIDA AIRPORT. DURING A LOCAL FLIGHT, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. THE PILOT CHECKED THE MAGNETOS AND NOTICED A NORMAL DROP IN RPM. SHORTLY AFTER THE MAG CHECK THE ENGINE FAILED. THE PILOT TRIED TO MAKE A FORCED LANDING AT THE SEBRING AIRPORT, HOWEVER, THERE WAS NOT ENOUGHTIME AND ELECTED TO LAND IN A FIELD APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES EAST OF THE SEBRING AIRPORT. MECHANICS FROM CARTER AIRCRAFT AND PJ AIRCRAFT COMPANIES (SEBRING AIRPORT) INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE AND THEY WOULD BE TEARING THE ENGINE DOWN TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF IT'S FAILURE. THE LOCAL POLICE WERE ON THE SCENE AND HAVE SENT A REPORT TO THIS OFFICE. E-MAILED PICTURES OF THE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN RECEIVED AND ARE ATTACHED TO THIS REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
