## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N6315R, PIPER PA-28-140, ON FINAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 30 AT NANTUCKET MA. WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE RUNWAY AND LANDED APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 MILES EAST OF THE RUNWAY 30 AT 1100 EST, 01/12/02. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. PILOT (MARK STEPHEN CONWAY) REPORTED ENGINE FAILURE. DAMAGE IS CONSIDERED AS SUBSTANTIAL. PILOT STATED THAT AT APPROXIMATELY 800 FEET, ON HIS BASE LEG, HE PUSHED IN THE THROTTLE, THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND. HE CHECKED THE FUEL SELECTOR, IGNITION, AND MAGNETOS, ALL SEEMED GOOD. THE ENGINE WAS WIND MILLING BUT WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE INPUT. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD CARBURETOR HEAT ON. INITIAL DAMAGE REPORTED AS A BROKEN RIGHT GEAR, TOP OF RIGHT WING RIPPLED, RIGHT GEAR PUNCTURED THE TOP OF RIGHT WING, RIGHT HORIZONTAL STAB RIPPLED BOARDING STEP RIPPED OFF, LEFT WING TIP CAVED IN APPROX. 6' X 5'. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL PROBABLY TOTAL THE AIRCRAFT. THE LAST ANNUAL WAS C/W ON 01/08/02. THIS WAS THE THIRD FLIGHT SINCE THE ANNUAL ON 01/08/02. THE AIRCRAFT TOTAL TIME IS 3825 HOURS. WE RAN THE ENGINE AND IT OPERATED NORMALLY, BUT THE IDLE SPEED WAS SET VERY LOW, APPROXIMATELY 450-500 RPM, IT SHOULD BE 750 RPM. DURING THE DOWNWIND LEG THE PILOT STATED THAT HE PULLED THE THROTTLE BACK TO IDLE TO SLOW DOWN, DUE TO THE TAIL WIND, AND SELECTED CARBURETOR HEAT ONL WHEN WE RAN THE ENGINE ON THE GROUND, WE FOUND THAT WHEN THE THROTTLE WAS PULLED BACK TO IDLE AND CARBURETOR HEAT WAS SELECTED ON THE ENGINE WOULD ALMOST QUIT 400 450 RPM. THIS IS PROBABLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MR. CONWAY. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC02LA048](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC02LA048), Jan 12, 2002: Piper PA-28 (N6315R), Nantucket, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: a loss of engine power for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
